Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve

The Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is situated right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city. It was gazetted in 1906 and was formerly known as Bucket Weld Forest Reserve. The forest covers land area of approximately 11 hectares and it is the inner-city slice of tropical rainforest at the base of the 421 meters height Kuala Lumpur Tower, which is one of the Kuala Lumpur’s most prominent landmarks. Kuala Lumpur Tower was constructed with utmost attention being paid to the environment to ensure the natural surroundings of Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve remain undisturbed.

Visitors who are planning to visit Kuala Lumpur Tower may want to consider spending around one hour walking through the jungle trails that are well maintained here. The entrance to the park is just beside the entrance to Kuala Lumpur Tower. A complimentary nature walk is provided for those who are visiting the Observation Deck at Kuala Lumpur Tower. All visitors need to do is just show the ticket at the Forest Trail Gate for a guided tour of the forest. As the weather can be humid and hot, remember to bring along a bottle of water to quench your thirst.

Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is the only remaining virgin tropical rainforest in the heart of the city of Kuala Lumpur. It serves as a natural green lung for the surrounding metropolitan area. The city planners are dedicated to preserving this jungle located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Originally home of the tiger and elephants, Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is still home to monkeys, pythons, squirrels, and monitor lizards. In addition, this forest has rich variety of flora such as rare herbs, creepers, ferns, climbers, giant bamboo grasses, and the more than 100 years old Jelutong Tree.

There are two main nature trails that visitors can follow in this forest reserve, the 361 meters Merbau Trail and the 300 meters Jelutong Trail. Visitors can grab a map of Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve before embark the journey of discovering the forest. Along the way, visitors can see there are many signages with information that are placed near the tree species which include Kapur (Dryobalanops aromatica), Keruing bulu (Dipterocarpus baudii), Jelutong (Dyera costulata), Meranti pa’ang (Shorea bracteolata) and Rattan (Calamus manan). Visitors who are lucky enough may stumble upon the silver lacquer and the long tailed macauque monkeys that live in this forest. Squirrels, bird species such as White-Throated King Fisher, Common Myna, Yellow-Vented Bulbul and White-Rumped Shama can also be found here.

Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is open to the public. The entrance to the forest is just beside the entrance to Kuala Lumpur Tower. Its operating hours is from 7a.m. to 6p.m. and daily guided tours are available free of charge at 10:30am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm, and 4:30pm. Visitors can experience birds watching, jungle trekking, jogging trails, forest walk, camping, playground, and discover flora fauna especially the Jelutong Tree. How To Get There
The Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is located near KL tower. Visitors can take the Kuala Lumpur Monorail to Bukit Nanas station. From there, visitors can take a 10 minutes walk to the main gate at Jalan Puncak. Then, the free shuttle service at an interval of 15 minutes is available from 9:00am to 6:00pm for visitors to reach to the tower. After 6:00pm, it is better to take a taxi to the tower.
