
Petaling Street (or locally Jalan Petaling), is a street market located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur City Center. It is better known as Kuala Lumpur Chinatown among the tourists and “Chee Cheong Kai” among the local Chinese. All the narrow streets in Petaling Street are lined with traditional Chinese shops, markets and eateries.
Petaling Street is the Kuala Lumpur’s traditional commercial district lies to the east of the Klang River. Although the old pre-World War Two shop houses are quickly disappearing and being replaced with modern buildings, the area is still fascinating enough for a wonder. Chinatown is also where you can find budget accommodation. Haggling is a common sight here and the place is usually crowded with locals as well as tourists.

Chinatown or Petaling Street is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kuala Lumpur. In the evenings, part of the road is closed to traffic and it transforms itself into a bustling night market. Petaling Street is a place visitors can find variety of bootlegs selling counterfeit products like branded t-shirts, leather goods, handbags, wallets, watches, shoes, accessories, fabrics and souvenirs. The products mainly tailored towards the tourists. Prices are usually quoted more than what they should be. For buyers, it is often possible to bargain the price tag of all counterfeit items. Of course be reasonable unless you do not mind being ripped off. Majority traders in Petaling Street are mainly Chinese but there are also Indian, Malay, and Bangladeshi traders.


Petaling Street is also a place to venture great food, a place with dozens of restaurants and food stalls offering large selection of local cuisine. The taste of food here is very much authentically Chinese. After all, it is Chinatown. Visitors can find local famous cuisine such as Hokkien fried noodle, roast duck, ikan bakar (barbecued fish), asam laksa, curry noodles, soya bean drink, Guai Ling Gou and more. If you wander into the side lanes, you will still be able to glimpse the old Chinatown, from the lane that sells funeral wreaths to the almost hidden wet market selling live poultry, seafood, and fresh vegetables.
At nearby Petaling Street, visitors can find several tourist spots with famous landmarks like:
- Chan She Shu Yuen Clan Association at Jalan Petaling. It is the clan house of the Yuen family, the largest and the oldest in Kuala Lumpur, with the present version completed in 1906. Admission is free and donations are welcome). It opens daily from 8am to 5pm.
- Sri Mahamariamman Temple located along Jalan Tun H.S. Lee. It is one of the Kuala Lumpur’s oldest and richest Hindu temples. It receives many devotees and tourists daily.
- Sze Ya Temple at Jalan Tun HS Lee. It is the oldest Chinese temple in Kuala Lumpur built in 1882, located behind the old shophouses between Jalan Tun HS Lee and Jalan Hang Kasturi.
- Central Market at Jalan Hang Kasturi, a few minutes away from Petaling Street, Central Market which was built in 1888 was originally a wet market. It has since been classified as a Heritage Site by the Malaysian Heritage Society and it is now a landmark for Malaysian culture and heritage displaying a wide variety of Malaysian Arts and Handicrafts, Batek, Antiques and attractive souvenirs.
